Your Fertility, Your Timing

If you’re planning a family but you’re not yet ready, egg freezing may be worth considering. Egg freezing is a form of fertility preservation; it stores eggs for future use, so they are available when the time feels right for you.

At Surfcoast Fertility, we offer comprehensive, compassionate support to help you find what’s right for your fertility journey.

What Egg Freezing Means

Egg freezing is a process where a woman’s unfertilised eggs are frozen and stored for later use. To do this, the woman undergoes an Ovarian Stimulation Cycle, similar to IVF.

The eggs are then collected, frozen, and stored until needed. While this may be done at any time, it’s important to note that egg quality declines with age. The older a woman is, the more eggs may need to be frozen to have the same chance at live birth.

Who is Egg Freezing For?

There are many personal reasons why someone may consider egg freezing. However, it may be more commonly considered by women who:

  • Are not planning a pregnancy in the near future
  • Have demanding career commitments
  • Are in their 30s or 40s and would like the option of having two or three children
  • Have a family history of early menopause
  • Have a history of ovarian damage, such as endometriomas or previous removal of an ovary
  • May require chemotherapy in the near future

The Egg Freezing Process Made Simple

Hormonal stimulation usually takes place around 10-12 days prior to egg collection. This process aims to help stimulate the ovaries in an effort to produce multiple eggs.

Once ready, the eggs are collected during a procedure that uses an ultrasound-guided probe. A fine needle attached to the probe is then used to collect the eggs from the ovary.

The collected eggs are then vitrified, a process in which the water within the egg is replaced with a protective fluid. The eggs are then frozen using liquid nitrogen at -196°C and stored for future use.

Common Egg Freezing Questions

Is egg collection painful?

The egg collection procedure is generally performed under a light anaesthetic or sedation. This aims to help mitigate any pain and discomfort you may experience.

Your eggs may be stored for many years without harm. In some states, there may be laws governing how long they can be held. However, this can often be extended with approval.

Costs for egg freezing may vary depending on individual circumstances. Egg freezing may also be covered by Medicare if it is deemed medically necessary. Speak to your Surfcoast Fertility specialist or visit our costs page for more information.
