About the Egg Freezing Process

Egg freezing is a process where a woman’s unfertilised eggs are frozen and stored for later use. To do this, the woman undergoes an Ovarian Stimulation Cycle, similar to IVF.

Once collected, the eggs are frozen and stored until the time comes to use them. It is worth noting that egg quality can decline as a woman ages, which may mean that more eggs need to be frozen to achieve the same likelihood of a live birth.

Is Egg Freezing Right for You?

There are many personal reasons why someone may consider egg freezing. However, it may be more commonly considered by women who:

  • Are planning to delay pregnancy for the time being
  • Have demanding career commitments
  • Are anticipating the need for chemotherapy in the coming period

The Egg Freezing Process Explained

Hormonal stimulation is usually commenced approximately 10-12 days prior to egg collection. The purpose of this process is to help stimulate the ovaries so that multiple eggs may be produced.

When the eggs are ready for collection, a procedure using an ultrasound-guided probe is performed. A fine needle connected to the probe is used to carefully collect the eggs from the ovary.

Once collected, the eggs undergo vitrification, a process where the water inside the egg is replaced with a protective fluid. The eggs are then frozen in liquid nitrogen at -196°C and stored until they are needed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Egg Freezing

What can I expect in terms of discomfort during egg collection?

Egg collection is typically carried out under a light anaesthetic or sedation, which is intended to help minimise any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

Your eggs can generally be stored for many years without any adverse effects. Depending on the state, there may be regulations governing the length of storage, however an extension can often be arranged with approval.

The costs associated with egg freezing can vary based on individual circumstances. Medicare may also provide coverage for egg freezing where it is considered medically necessary. To learn more, please reach out to your Surfcoast Fertility consultant or visit our costs page.
