What You Should Know About Egg Freezing

Egg freezing is a procedure in which a woman’s unfertilised eggs are collected, frozen, and stored until they are needed. To prepare for egg collection, the woman undergoes an Ovarian Stimulation Cycle, a process comparable to that used in IVF.

The eggs are collected, frozen, and stored for future use. However, it is worth keeping in mind that egg quality naturally declines with age. As a result, the older a woman is at the time of freezing, the more eggs that may be required to achieve the same prospect of a live birth.

Who Might Consider Egg Freezing?

There are many personal reasons why someone may consider egg freezing. However, it may be more commonly considered by women who:

  • Do not have immediate plans to start a family
  • Have demanding career commitments
  • May be commencing chemotherapy treatment soon

A Simple Guide to the Egg Freezing Process

Hormonal stimulation usually takes place around 10-12 days prior to egg collection. This process aims to help stimulate the ovaries in an effort to produce multiple eggs.

When the eggs are ready for collection, a procedure using an ultrasound-guided probe is performed. A fine needle connected to the probe is used to carefully collect the eggs from the ovary.

The collected eggs are then vitrified, a process in which the water within the egg is replaced with a protective fluid. The eggs are then frozen using liquid nitrogen at -196°C and stored for future use.

Common Egg Freezing Questions

Will egg collection cause pain?

The egg collection procedure is usually performed under a light anaesthetic or sedation in an effort to reduce any pain or discomfort you may experience.

Your eggs can generally be stored for many years without any adverse effects. Depending on the state, there may be regulations governing the length of storage, however an extension can often be arranged with approval.

The costs associated with egg freezing can vary based on individual circumstances. Medicare may also provide coverage for egg freezing where it is considered medically necessary. To learn more, please reach out to your Surfcoast Fertility consultant or visit our costs page.
