What Egg Freezing Means
Egg freezing is a procedure in which a woman’s unfertilised eggs are collected, frozen, and stored until they are needed. To prepare for egg collection, the woman undergoes an Ovarian Stimulation Cycle, a process comparable to that used in IVF.
After collection, the eggs are frozen and stored until they are needed. It is important to be aware that egg quality tends to decrease with age, meaning that a greater number of eggs may need to be frozen to maintain a similar chance of a successful live birth.
Who is Egg Freezing For?
Egg freezing may be considered for a variety of personal reasons. It is perhaps more commonly explored by women who:
- Are planning to delay pregnancy for the time being
- Have experienced ovarian damage in the past, including conditions such as endometriomas or prior removal of an ovary
- May require chemotherapy in the near future

Understanding the Egg Freezing Process
1. Hormonal Stimulation
Hormonal stimulation is usually commenced approximately 10-12 days prior to egg collection. The purpose of this process is to help stimulate the ovaries so that multiple eggs may be produced.
2. Egg Collection
Once ready, the eggs are collected during a procedure that uses an ultrasound-guided probe. A fine needle attached to the probe is then used to collect the eggs from the ovary.
3. Egg Freezing
The collected eggs are then vitrified, a process in which the water within the egg is replaced with a protective fluid. The eggs are then frozen using liquid nitrogen at -196°C and stored for future use.

Will egg collection cause pain?
A light anaesthetic or sedation is generally used during the egg collection procedure, with the aim of helping to manage any pain or discomfort throughout the process.
How long can eggs be stored for?
Your eggs can generally be stored for many years without any adverse effects. Depending on the state, there may be regulations governing the length of storage, however an extension can often be arranged with approval.
What are the costs involved in egg freezing?
