About the Egg Freezing Process

Egg freezing involves collecting and storing a woman’s unfertilised eggs for future use. The process requires the woman to undergo an Ovarian Stimulation Cycle, which is similar to that used in IVF.

After collection, the eggs are frozen and stored until they are needed. It is important to be aware that egg quality tends to decrease with age, meaning that a greater number of eggs may need to be frozen to maintain a similar chance of a successful live birth.

Who Might Consider Egg Freezing?

There are many personal reasons why someone may consider egg freezing. However, it may be more commonly considered by women who:

  • Are not planning a pregnancy in the near future
  • Have demanding career commitments
  • Are facing the possibility of chemotherapy treatment in the near future

A Simple Guide to the Egg Freezing Process

The hormonal stimulation phase generally begins around 10-12 days before egg collection takes place. This stage aims to support the ovaries in producing multiple eggs.

Once ready, the eggs are collected during a procedure that uses an ultrasound-guided probe. A fine needle attached to the probe is then used to collect the eggs from the ovary.

The eggs are then vitrified once collected, which involves replacing the water within each egg with a protective fluid. Following this, the eggs are frozen in liquid nitrogen at -196°C and stored safely for future use.

Common Questions About Egg Freezing

Will egg collection cause pain?

A light anaesthetic or sedation is generally used during the egg collection procedure, with the aim of helping to manage any pain or discomfort throughout the process.

Frozen eggs may be stored safely for many years. It is worth noting that some states have legislation on how long eggs may be stored, though this period can often be extended with the appropriate approval.

Egg freezing costs may differ depending on your personal circumstances. It is also worth noting that Medicare may cover egg freezing if it is regarded as medically necessary. For more detailed information, please speak with your Surfcoast Fertility consultant or take a look at our costs page.
