What Egg Freezing Means

Egg freezing involves collecting and storing a woman’s unfertilised eggs for future use. The process requires the woman to undergo an Ovarian Stimulation Cycle, which is similar to that used in IVF.

The eggs are then collected, frozen, and stored until needed. While this may be done at any time, it’s important to note that egg quality declines with age. The older a woman is, the more eggs may need to be frozen to have the same chance of live birth.

Who is Egg Freezing For?

There are many reasons why someone might consider egg freezing, and these are often very personal in nature. That said, it may be more frequently considered by women who:

  • Do not have immediate plans to start a family
  • Have demanding career commitments
  • Are anticipating the need for chemotherapy in the coming period

A Simple Guide to the Egg Freezing Process

Hormonal stimulation is typically carried out around 10-12 days before egg collection. This process is designed to help encourage the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.

When the eggs are ready for collection, a procedure using an ultrasound-guided probe is performed. A fine needle connected to the probe is used to carefully collect the eggs from the ovary.

The eggs are then vitrified once collected, which involves replacing the water within each egg with a protective fluid. Following this, the eggs are frozen in liquid nitrogen at -196°C and stored safely for future use.

Common Questions About Egg Freezing

What can I expect in terms of discomfort during egg collection?

The egg collection procedure is generally performed under a light anaesthetic or sedation. This aims to help mitigate any pain and discomfort you may experience.

Your eggs can generally be stored for many years without any adverse effects. Depending on the state, there may be regulations governing the length of storage, however an extension can often be arranged with approval.

The cost of egg freezing can vary depending on your individual situation. In some cases, egg freezing may be covered by Medicare if it is considered medically necessary. We encourage you to speak with your Surfcoast Fertility consultant or visit our costs page to find out more.
