What is Sperm Freezing?

Sperm freezing is a process where sperm is collected and then frozen using a carefully controlled method. It may then be stored for many years while maintaining sperm viability and quality.

When the time comes, this sperm may be used for IVF (in vitro fertilisation) or ICSI (intracytoplasmic injection). Since sperm quality may be higher at a younger age, there may be advantages to freezing sperm earlier rather than later.

Is Sperm Freezing Right for You?

Sperm freezing is generally an option for anyone, especially as sperm quality and quantity may change with age. However, it may also be worth considering if you:

  • Are experiencing a low sperm count
  • Are planning to delay family planning for the time being
  • Are planning on a vasectomy for contraception|Are considering a vasectomy as a form of contraception|Are thinking about having a vasectomy for contraceptive purposes|Are planning to undergo a vasectomy for contraception}
  • Require testicular surgery or chemotherapy|Are facing testicular surgery or chemotherapy|Are due to undergo testicular surgery or chemotherapy|Have been advised to have testicular surgery or chemotherapy}
  • Are due to commence toxic drug treatment at a future date
  • Occasionally use anabolic steroidss

The Sperm Freezing Process

Sperm collection may occur in a number of ways, based on your individual needs and preferences. A sample may be provided at our clinic for timely freezing, or at home if that is more suitable.

If you are unable to provide a semen sample, a testicular biopsy may be considered. This is a procedure where sperm is carefully retrieved directly from the testicles with a needle.

Once the sperm has been collected, it is carefully prepared and mixed with a protective fluid. The sample is then progressively cooled until it reaches a frozen state in liquid nitrogen at –196°C.

Not all sperm will survive this process. Typically, 50-60% of sperm remain viable after freezing.

Once frozen, sperm is stored securely until it is needed. Ongoing storage may involve an annual fee, which our team will discuss with you.

In Victoria, sperm may be stored for up to 10 years. Approval may be required if you wish to continue storage beyond this timeframe.

Answering Your Sperm Freezing Questions

Is sperm freezing covered by Medicare?

Medicare rebates may be applicable where the procedure is deemed medically necessary. This may be relevant if you are about to commence treatment, such as chemotherapy, that may impact your fertility.

Please be aware that ongoing sperm storage fees are not covered by Medicare or private health insurance, and are typically paid out of pocket.

Costs may differ depending on your personal circumstances and storage requirements. To find out more, visit our costs page or contact our team directly.

SEE COSTS

During your appointment, a member of our team will conduct a consultation to review your medical history, talk through your goals, and organise any required blood tests.

Our team will also take the time to explain what to expect before sperm is collected, aiming to help you feel informed and supported throughout.

It may be recommended that you abstain from ejaculation for a brief period prior to collection. Tailored guidance may be provided before your appointment to assist with the process.

There is no clear evidence to suggest that frozen sperm raises the risk of pregnancy complications. Our team is here to walk you through any known risks or considerations at your appointment.

If you choose to stop storage, you may be asked to complete consent documentation. Our team will guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have.
