Take a Proactive Step in Fertility Preservation
Have you been thinking about your fertility? Sperm freezing is a well-regarded approach to fertility preservation that may offer you greater flexibility for the future, allowing you to consider family planning in your own time.
At Surfcoast Fertility, our team is here to support you with compassionate, patient-focused care as you consider your fertility options.

What Does Sperm Freezing Involve?
Sperm freezing is a process where sperm is collected and then frozen using a carefully controlled method. It may then be stored for many years while maintaining sperm viability and quality.
Once needed, the frozen sperm may be used in IVF (in vitro fertilisation) or ICSI (intracytoplasmic injection). Given that sperm quality may be higher at a younger age, freezing sperm sooner may provide greater potential benefits in the future.
Could Sperm Freezing Be the Right Choice for You?
Sperm freezing is broadly available to anyone, particularly as sperm quality and quantity may shift with age. It may also be worth exploring if you:
- Have been told you have a low sperm count
- Are not planning on a family in the near future
- Are planning on a vasectomy for contraception|Are considering a vasectomy as a form of contraception|Are thinking about having a vasectomy for contraceptive purposes|Are planning to undergo a vasectomy for contraception}
- Require testicular surgery or chemotherapy|Are facing testicular surgery or chemotherapy|Are due to undergo testicular surgery or chemotherapy|Have been advised to have testicular surgery or chemotherapy}
- Are planning to begin toxic drug treatment in the future
- Use anabolic steroids at timess

The Sperm Freezing Process
1. Sperm Collection
There are several ways sperm may be collected, depending on what suits your individual needs and preferences. A sample may be collected at our clinic for prompt freezing, or at home if required.
Where a semen sample cannot be provided, a testicular biopsy may be explored as an alternative. This procedure involves carefully retrieving sperm directly from the testicles using a needle.
2. Freezing the Sperm
After collection, the sperm is carefully prepared and combined with a protective fluid. The sample is then slowly cooled until it is frozen in liquid nitrogen at –196°C.
Not all sperm will survive this process. Typically, 50-60% of sperm remain viable after freezing.
3. Storage
When frozen, sperm is held in secure storage until it is needed. Our team will discuss any ongoing annual storage fees with you during your consultation.
In Victoria, sperm may be kept in storage for a period of up to 10 years. Should you wish to continue storage beyond this time, approval may need to be sought.
Frequently Asked Questions About Sperm Freezing
Does Medicare cover sperm freezing?
Medicare rebates may be accessible if the procedure is regarded as medically necessary. This may be the case if you are preparing to undergo treatment, such as chemotherapy, that could have an impact on your fertility.
However, ongoing sperm storage fees are not covered by Medicare or private health insurance and are typically paid out of pocket.
What are the costs involved in sperm freezing?
The overall cost may vary based on your individual situation and storage requirements. For more details, we encourage you to visit our costs page or speak with our team.
What happens at my appointment?
At your appointment, one of our team members will meet with you to go over your medical history, discuss your fertility goals, and arrange any blood tests that may be needed.
Our team will also take the time to explain what to expect before sperm is collected, aiming to help you feel informed and supported throughout.
What preparation is needed before sperm collection?
It may be recommended that you abstain from ejaculation for a brief period prior to collection. Tailored guidance may be provided before your appointment to assist with the process.
Does the use of frozen sperm affect the risk of pregnancy complications?
What happens if I decide I no longer need storage?
Should you choose to stop storage, completing consent documentation may be required. Our team will support you through the process and answer any questions you may have.
