Take a Proactive Step in Fertility Preservation
Are you concerned about your sperm fertility? Sperm freezing is a trusted method of fertility preservation that may give you more flexibility for the future, so that you can consider family planning at your own pace.
At Surfcoast Fertility, our team provides caring, considerate support to help you navigate your fertility options.

What is Sperm Freezing?
Sperm freezing is a procedure in which sperm is collected and frozen through a carefully managed process. It may then be stored for a number of years while preserving sperm viability and quality.
When ready, this sperm may then be used for IVF (in vitro fertilisation) or ICSI (intracytoplasmic injection). As sperm quality may be higher at a younger age, freezing sperm earlier may have greater benefits in the future.
Thinking About Whether Sperm Freezing is Right for You?
Sperm freezing is an option that may suit anyone, as sperm quality and quantity can change over time. It may be especially worth considering if you:
- Have been told you have a low sperm count
- Are planning to delay family planning for the time being

Understanding the Sperm Freezing Process
1. Sperm Collection
Sperm may be collected in a variety of ways, tailored to your individual needs and preferences. You may provide a sample at our clinic for immediate freezing, or at home if that is more convenient.
If providing a semen sample is not possible, a testicular biopsy may be considered. This is a procedure in which sperm is carefully collected directly from the testicles with a needle.
2. Freezing the Sperm
Once collected, the sperm is carefully prepared and mixed with a protective fluid. The sample is then gradually cooled until it is frozen in liquid nitrogen at –196°C.
Not all sperm will survive this process. Typically, 50-60% of sperm remain viable after freezing.
3. Storage
Once frozen, your sperm is stored safely until the time comes to use it. Ongoing storage may involve an annual fee, and our team will be happy to discuss this with you.
In Victoria, sperm may be kept in storage for a period of up to 10 years. Should you wish to continue storage beyond this time, approval may need to be sought.
Your Sperm Freezing Questions Answered
Is Medicare available for sperm freezing?
Medicare rebates may be available if the procedure is considered medically necessary. This may apply if you are about to undergo treatment, such as chemotherapy, that could affect your fertility.
It is important to note that ongoing sperm storage fees are not covered by Medicare or private health insurance and are generally an out-of-pocket expense.
How much should I expect to pay for sperm freezing?
The cost of sperm freezing may vary depending on your individual circumstances and storage needs. For further information, please visit our costs page or get in touch with our team.
What can I expect at my appointment?
During your appointment, a member of our team will conduct a consultation to review your medical history, talk through your goals, and organise any required blood tests.
They will also walk you through everything you need to know prior to sperm collection, so you may feel well-informed and supported at every stage.
How should I prepare before sperm collection?
Abstaining from ejaculation for a short period before collection may be advised. Our team may provide specific guidance prior to your appointment to help things go smoothly.
Does freezing sperm increase the risk of pregnancy complications?
What are my options if I decide to stop storing my sperm?
Should you choose to stop storage, completing consent documentation may be required. Our team will support you through the process and answer any questions you may have.
