Understanding Sperm Freezing

Sperm freezing is a process where sperm is collected and then frozen using a carefully controlled method. It may then be stored for many years while maintaining sperm viability and quality.

Once needed, the frozen sperm may be used in IVF (in vitro fertilisation) or ICSI (intracytoplasmic injection). Given that sperm quality may be higher at a younger age, freezing sperm sooner may provide greater potential benefits in the future.

Is Sperm Freezing Worth Considering?

Sperm freezing is generally something anyone may consider, particularly given that sperm quality and quantity may vary with age. It may also be a worthwhile option if you:

  • Have a lower than usual sperm count
  • Are not considering starting a family in the near future
  • Are planning on a vasectomy for contraception|Are considering a vasectomy as a form of contraception|Are thinking about having a vasectomy for contraceptive purposes|Are planning to undergo a vasectomy for contraception}
  • Require testicular surgery or chemotherapy|Are facing testicular surgery or chemotherapy|Are due to undergo testicular surgery or chemotherapy|Have been advised to have testicular surgery or chemotherapy}
  • Will be starting toxic drug treatment in the future
  • Use anabolic steroids from time to times

Steps Involved in the Sperm Freezing Process

Sperm collection may occur in a number of ways, based on your individual needs and preferences. A sample may be provided at our clinic for timely freezing, or at home if that is more suitable.

If providing a semen sample is not possible, a testicular biopsy may be considered. This is a procedure in which sperm is carefully collected directly from the testicles with a needle.

Once the sperm has been collected, it is carefully prepared and mixed with a protective fluid. The sample is then progressively cooled until it reaches a frozen state in liquid nitrogen at –196°C.

It is important to note that not all sperm will survive this process. Generally, 50-60% of sperm remain viable after freezing.

After freezing, sperm is kept in secure storage until it is required. Ongoing storage may incur an annual fee, which our team will talk through with you.

In Victoria, sperm may be stored for up to 10 years. Approval may be required if you wish to continue storage beyond this timeframe.

Common Questions About Sperm Freezing

Is sperm freezing covered by Medicare?

Medicare rebates may be accessible if the procedure is regarded as medically necessary. This may be the case if you are preparing to undergo treatment, such as chemotherapy, that could have an impact on your fertility.

Please be aware that ongoing sperm storage fees are not covered by Medicare or private health insurance, and are typically paid out of pocket.

Costs may vary depending on your individual circumstances and storage requirements. For more information, visit our costs page or reach out to our team.

SEE COSTS

During your appointment, a member of our team will conduct a consultation to review your medical history, talk through your goals, and organise any required blood tests.

Our team will also take the time to explain what to expect before sperm is collected, aiming to help you feel informed and supported throughout.

Abstaining from ejaculation for a short period before collection may be advised. Our team may provide specific guidance prior to your appointment to help things go smoothly.

Current evidence does not suggest that using frozen sperm increases the risk of pregnancy complications. Our team is available to discuss any known risks or considerations with you.

Should you decide to discontinue storage, you may be required to complete consent documentation. Our team will be on hand to guide you through the process and address any questions you may have.
