Take a Proactive Step in Fertility Preservation
Are you concerned about your sperm fertility? Sperm freezing is a trusted method of fertility preservation that may give you more flexibility for the future, so that you can consider family planning at your own pace.
At Surfcoast Fertility, we are here to walk alongside you with compassionate, patient-centred care as you think through your fertility choices.

What is Sperm Freezing?
Sperm freezing is a procedure in which sperm is collected and frozen through a carefully managed process. It may then be stored for a number of years while preserving sperm viability and quality.
When the time comes, this sperm may be used for IVF (in vitro fertilisation) or ICSI (intracytoplasmic injection). Since sperm quality may be higher at a younger age, there may be advantages to freezing sperm earlier rather than later.
Could Sperm Freezing Be the Right Choice for You?
Sperm freezing is generally an option for anyone, especially as sperm quality and quantity may change with age. However, it may also be worth considering if you:
- Have been told you have a low sperm count
- Are not planning on a family in the near future
- Are planning on a vasectomy for contraception|Are considering a vasectomy as a form of contraception|Are thinking about having a vasectomy for contraceptive purposes|Are planning to undergo a vasectomy for contraception}
- Require testicular surgery or chemotherapy|Are facing testicular surgery or chemotherapy|Are due to undergo testicular surgery or chemotherapy|Have been advised to have testicular surgery or chemotherapy}
- Anticipate starting toxic drug treatment down the track

Thinking about sperm freezing?
Our caring team is here to help you through every step of the process.
How the Sperm Freezing Process Works
1. Sperm Collection
Sperm may be collected in a variety of ways, tailored to your individual needs and preferences. You may provide a sample at our clinic for immediate freezing, or at home if that is more convenient.
If providing a semen sample is not possible, a testicular biopsy may be considered. This is a procedure in which sperm is carefully collected directly from the testicles with a needle.
2. Freezing the Sperm
Once the sperm has been collected, it is carefully prepared and mixed with a protective fluid. The sample is then progressively cooled until it reaches a frozen state in liquid nitrogen at –196°C.
It is worth noting that not all sperm will survive the freezing process. Typically, 50-60% of sperm remain viable once frozen.
3. Storage
After freezing, sperm is kept in secure storage until it is required. Ongoing storage may incur an annual fee, which our team will talk through with you.
Within Victoria, sperm storage may be maintained for up to 10 years. If you wish to extend storage beyond this period, approval may be required.
Frequently Asked Questions About Sperm Freezing
Is Medicare available for sperm freezing?
Medicare rebates may be applicable where the procedure is deemed medically necessary. This may be relevant if you are about to commence treatment, such as chemotherapy, that may impact your fertility.
Please be aware that ongoing sperm storage fees are not covered by Medicare or private health insurance, and are typically paid out of pocket.
What is the cost of sperm freezing?
The overall cost may vary based on your individual situation and storage requirements. For more details, we encourage you to visit our costs page or speak with our team.
What can I expect at my appointment?
When you come in for your appointment, a member of our team will sit down with you to review your medical history, discuss your goals, and coordinate any necessary blood tests.
They will also explain what you need to know before sperm is collected, so you may feel informed and supported throughout the process.
