Plan Your Future With Customised Fertility Care

For many, the process of fertility treatment can feel both overwhelming and costly. Embryo freezing is frequently used as a fertility preservation method, as it may offer greater flexibility during fertility treatment while helping to preserve your options.

At Surfcoast Fertility, we appreciate that fertility decisions may be an emotional experience, which is why we deliver evidence-based, patient-centred care designed around your individual needs.

Understanding Embryo Freezing

Throughout the IVF process, a number of embryos are created and given five to six days to develop following fertilisation. Once development has occurred, the most appropriate embryo is selected for transfer.

Remaining embryos may be frozen for potential use in future treatment cycles. This is a common aspect of the IVF process and may allow further treatment to proceed without the need for additional ovarian stimulation.

Possible Benefits of Embryo Freezing

Embryos remaining from an IVF cycle may be stored securely for up to five years in Victoria, with the option to extend storage with the appropriate approval.

The potential of frozen embryos is preserved from the time of freezing, and is not affected by the woman’s current age.

At Surfcoast Fertility, pregnancy rates for frozen embryos are frequently comparable to, or in some cases higher than, those seen with fresh embryo transfers.

Duostim is an option for women seeking to create multiple embryos in a short timeframe.

Common Embryo Freezing Questions

Who is embryo freezing suited to?

There are a number of reasons why embryo freezing may be worth discussing with your care team. It is often considered if you are:

  • Undertaking IVF
  • Undergoing preimplantation genetic testing (PGT)
  • Undergoing hormone therapy
  • Preparing for cancer treatment
  • Planning gender affirmation surgery
  • Seeking to reduce the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome

When ovulation occurs, or once the uterus has been appropriately prepared, frozen embryos are gradually thawed. One or more thawed embryos may then be placed into the uterus during a frozen embryo transfer (FET). After the transfer, we monitor progress to assess whether a pregnancy has been achieved.

Embryo freezing involves a number of costs that are worth considering. Hormone treatments, egg harvesting, embryo culture, freezing, and ongoing storage may all contribute to the overall expense. If you have questions about costs, please do not hesitate to get in touch with our team or take a look at our costs page.

SEE COSTS

Pregnancy outcomes from frozen embryo transfers can vary. One factor that may influence the likelihood of pregnancy is the woman’s age at the time of egg collection, with younger eggs generally considered to have greater viability.

In most instances, the survival rate of frozen embryos through the thawing process is greater than 95%.
