Embryo Storage Lara

Take the Next Step With Individualised Fertility Care
Fertility treatments can feel complex and costly for many people. Embryo freezing is often considered as a fertility preservation method, providing additional flexibility throughout fertility treatment and supporting your future options.
At Surfcoast Fertility, we recognise that fertility decisions may be emotionally challenging, which is why we offer evidence-based, patient-centred care tailored to your personal circumstances.

An Overview of Embryo Freezing
During IVF treatment, several embryos are created and permitted to develop over a period of five to six days after fertilisation. Once they have reached the appropriate stage of development, the most suitable embryo is then chosen for transfer.
Any embryos that remain may be frozen for possible future use. This is a routine part of the IVF process and may mean that treatment can continue without requiring additional ovarian stimulation.
Potential Benefits of Embryo Freezing
Reliable Storage
Embryos remaining from an IVF cycle may be stored securely for up to five years in Victoria, with the option to extend storage with the appropriate approval.
Maintained Potential
The potential of frozen embryos is preserved from the time of freezing, and is not affected by the woman’s current age.
Pregnancy Rates
Surfcoast Fertility’s pregnancy rates for frozen embryos are often the same or sometimes better than fresh embryo transfers.
Duostim Options
Duostim is an option for women seeking to create multiple embryos in a short timeframe.

Understanding the Embryo Freezing Process
1. Sample Collection
During the IVF cycle, eggs and sperm are collected as part of your treatment plan.
2. Embryo Fertilisation
Once collected, the eggs are fertilised with sperm and allowed to develop into embryos. A fresh embryo may then be selected for transfer, with the remaining embryos frozen for potential future use.
3. Vitrification
Prior to freezing, the water content within the embryo is removed and replaced with a protective solution known as cryoprotectant. This process helps to protect the embryo from ice damage during freezing.
4. Freezing
The embryos are then placed in liquid nitrogen at -196 °C, where they are stored securely until they are needed for a future treatment cycle.

Your Embryo Freezing Questions Answered
Is embryo freezing right for you?
Embryo freezing may be a suitable option for a number of reasons. In many circumstances, it may be recommended if you are:
- Undertaking IVF
- Undergoing preimplantation genetic testing (PGT)
- Undergoing hormone therapy
- Preparing for cancer treatment
- Planning gender affirmation surgery
- Seeking to reduce the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome
What is the process for thawing and using frozen embryos?
At the time of ovulation, or once the uterus is considered ready, frozen embryos are slowly and carefully thawed. One or more of these embryos may then be transferred into the uterus during a frozen embryo transfer (FET). Following the transfer, we monitor to determine whether a pregnancy has taken place.
What are the costs involved in freezing embryos?
There are a number of costs to take into account when considering embryo freezing. Hormone treatments, egg harvesting, embryo culture, freezing, and storage may all factor into the overall cost. If you have any concerns about costs, please feel free to contact our team or visit our costs page.
How likely is a pregnancy from a frozen embryo transfer?
The likelihood of pregnancy varies. One contributing factor is the woman’s age at egg collection, as younger eggs are often more viable.
What is the survival rate of frozen embryos?
Generally speaking, more than 95% of embryos are able to survive the thawing process in most cases.
