Conventional IVF or ICSI – A guide to your Fertilisation options

blog post 4

One of the first critical decisions in an IVF cycle is how the egg and sperm will be introduced. The two main methods are Conventional IVF and ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection).A further advance of ICSI is the use of sperm selection in the HA ICSI process Ballarat IVF Fertility group scientists use HA ICSI as the preferred method  of fertilisation as pregnancy outcomes have been shown to be consistently better than routine ICSI  .Understanding the difference is key to feeling confident in your treatment plan.

Conventional IVF: The Natural Approach
Picture this: thousands of sperm are placed in a petri dish with a mature egg, and the race is on. The strongest, healthiest sperm must swim to and fertilise the egg on its own. This method mimics natural selection and is an excellent choice when sperm parameters (count, motility, and morphology) are within normal ranges. It’s less invasive and less expensive.

ICSI: The Precision Intervention
ICSI is a single-sperm procedure. An embryologist uses a fine needle to select and inject a single sperm directly into a mature egg. This bypasses all the natural barriers. ICSI was developed to overcome severe male factor infertility, including very low sperm count or poor motility. It’s also used in cases of previous IVF fertilisation failure, for genetic testing of embryos (PGT), or when using frozen sperm of limited quantity.

How Do We Choose?
The decision isn’t yours alone; it’s a recommendation from your clinical team based on diagnostic tests.

  • Choose Conventional IVF if: The semen analysis is normal and there is no history of failed fertilisation.
  • Choose ICSI if: There is a clear male factor, previous IVF failed to fertilise eggs, or for genetic testing.

There is no evidence that ICSI creates “better” embryos when sperm is healthy. The goal is always to use the most effective, least invasive tool for your specific situation. Have an open conversation with your Ballarat IVF fertility group doctor to understand why a particular method is recommended for you, ensuring your path forward is clear and personalised.
