What Egg Freezing Means

Egg freezing is a fertility preservation procedure where a woman’s unfertilised eggs are stored for potential future use. As part of the process, the woman undergoes an Ovarian Stimulation Cycle, similar to what is involved in IVF treatment.

Once collected, the eggs are frozen and stored until the time comes to use them. It is worth noting that egg quality can decline as a woman ages, which may mean that more eggs need to be frozen to achieve the same likelihood of a live birth.

Is Egg Freezing Right for You?

There are many reasons why someone might consider egg freezing, and these are often very personal in nature. That said, it may be more frequently considered by women who:

  • Are planning to delay pregnancy for the time being
  • Have a history of conditions affecting the ovaries, such as endometriomas, or have previously had an ovary removed
  • May require chemotherapy in the near future

The Egg Freezing Process Explained

Hormonal stimulation usually takes place around 10-12 days prior to egg collection. This process aims to help stimulate the ovaries in an effort to produce multiple eggs.

When the time comes for egg collection, an ultrasound-guided probe is used during the procedure. A fine needle connected to the probe is then carefully used to collect the eggs from the ovary.

Once collected, the eggs undergo vitrification, a process where the water inside the egg is replaced with a protective fluid. The eggs are then frozen in liquid nitrogen at -196°C and stored until they are needed.

Your Egg Freezing Questions Answered

Will egg collection cause pain?

The egg collection procedure is usually performed under a light anaesthetic or sedation in an effort to reduce any pain or discomfort you may experience.

Frozen eggs may be stored safely for many years. It is worth noting that some states have legislation on how long eggs may be stored, though this period can often be extended with the appropriate approval.

The costs associated with egg freezing can vary based on individual circumstances. Medicare may also provide coverage for egg freezing where it is considered medically necessary. To learn more, please reach out to your Surfcoast Fertility consultant or visit our costs page.
