Your Fertility, Your Timing
If you’d like to keep your options open for starting a family in the future, egg freezing may be something to consider. It is a form of fertility preservation that stores your eggs until you are ready, giving you greater flexibility around your family planning timeline.
At Surfcoast Fertility, our team is here to offer supportive, personalised care to help you navigate your fertility options.

What You Should Know About Egg Freezing
Egg freezing involves collecting and storing a woman’s unfertilised eggs for future use. The process requires the woman to undergo an Ovarian Stimulation Cycle, which is similar to that used in IVF.
After collection, the eggs are frozen and stored until they are needed. It is important to be aware that egg quality tends to decrease with age, meaning that a greater number of eggs may need to be frozen to maintain a similar chance of a successful live birth.
Who is Egg Freezing For?
The decision to freeze eggs is a personal one, and there are many reasons why someone may explore this option. It may be more commonly considered by women who:
- Are not planning a pregnancy in the near future
- Are navigating busy or demanding professional responsibilities
- Are in their 30s or 40s and wish to keep open the possibility of having more than one child
- Have a family background that includes early onset menopause
- Have a history of ovarian damage, such as endometriomas or previous removal of an ovary
- Are anticipating the need for chemotherapy in the coming period

The Egg Freezing Process Made Simple
1. Hormonal Stimulation
The hormonal stimulation phase generally begins around 10-12 days before egg collection takes place. This stage aims to support the ovaries in producing multiple eggs.
2. Egg Collection
Once ready, the eggs are collected during a procedure that uses an ultrasound-guided probe. A fine needle attached to the probe is then used to collect the eggs from the ovary.
3. Egg Freezing
The eggs are then vitrified once collected, which involves replacing the water within each egg with a protective fluid. Following this, the eggs are frozen in liquid nitrogen at -196°C and stored safely for future use.
Common Questions About Egg Freezing
Is the egg collection procedure uncomfortable?
Egg collection is typically carried out under a light anaesthetic or sedation, which is intended to help minimise any pain or discomfort during the procedure.
For how long can frozen eggs be kept in storage?
In most cases, eggs may be stored for many years without harm. Some states have laws in place regarding how long eggs can be stored, though it is often possible to extend this period with the relevant approval.
What are the costs involved in egg freezing?
The costs associated with egg freezing can vary based on individual circumstances. Medicare may also provide coverage for egg freezing where it is considered medically necessary. To learn more, please reach out to your Surfcoast Fertility consultant or visit our costs page.
