Fertility Preservation Colac
Care that’s tailored to your unique circumstances.

Your Future, Your Choice
If starting a family is on your mind but the timing isn’t quite right, egg freezing may be an option worth exploring. Egg freezing is a form of fertility preservation; it allows your eggs to be stored safely until you feel ready to use them.
At Surfcoast Fertility, we provide thorough, caring support to guide you through your fertility journey and help you find the path that may suit you best.

About the Egg Freezing Process
Egg freezing is a procedure in which a woman’s unfertilised eggs are collected, frozen, and stored until they are needed. To prepare for egg collection, the woman undergoes an Ovarian Stimulation Cycle, a process comparable to that used in IVF.
The eggs are then collected, frozen, and stored until needed. While this may be done at any time, it’s important to note that egg quality declines with age. The older a woman is, the more eggs may need to be frozen to have the same chance of live birth.
Who is Egg Freezing For?
There are many personal reasons why someone may consider egg freezing. However, it may be more commonly considered by women who:
- Are not planning a pregnancy in the near future
- Have had ovarian damage in the past, whether due to conditions such as endometriomas or the previous removal of an ovary
- May require chemotherapy in the near future

A Simple Guide to the Egg Freezing Process
1. Hormonal Stimulation
Hormonal stimulation usually takes place around 10-12 days prior to egg collection. This process aims to help stimulate the ovaries in an effort to produce multiple eggs.
2. Egg Collection
Egg collection takes place using an ultrasound-guided probe once the eggs are ready. A fine needle attached to the probe is then used to retrieve the eggs from the ovary.
3. Egg Freezing
The collected eggs are then vitrified, a process in which the water within the egg is replaced with a protective fluid. The eggs are then frozen using liquid nitrogen at -196°C and stored for future use.
Frequently Asked Questions About Egg Freezing
Is the egg collection procedure uncomfortable?
The egg collection procedure is generally performed under a light anaesthetic or sedation. This aims to help mitigate any pain and discomfort you may experience.
How long is it possible to store frozen eggs?
In most cases, eggs may be stored for many years without harm. Some states have laws in place regarding how long eggs can be stored, though it is often possible to extend this period with the relevant approval.
What are the costs involved in egg freezing?
The costs associated with egg freezing can vary based on individual circumstances. Medicare may also provide coverage for egg freezing where it is considered medically necessary. To learn more, please reach out to your Surfcoast Fertility consultant or visit our costs page.
