About Embryo Freezing
Throughout the IVF process, a number of embryos are created and given five to six days to develop following fertilisation. Once development has occurred, the most appropriate embryo is selected for transfer.
Any remaining embryos may then be frozen for potential future use. This is a common part of the IVF process and may allow treatment to continue without the need for further ovarian stimulation.

How the Embryo Freezing Process Works
1. Sample Collection
As part of the IVF cycle, eggs and sperm are collected in accordance with your treatment plan.
2. Embryo Fertilisation
After collection, the eggs are fertilised with sperm and permitted to develop into embryos. A fresh embryo may be selected for transfer, while any remaining embryos may be frozen for possible future use.
3. Vitrification
Before freezing, any water in the embryo is removed and replaced with a protective fluid called cryoprotectant. This helps prevent ice from damaging the embryo.
4. Freezing
The embryos are subsequently frozen in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196 °C and kept in secure storage until they are needed for future treatment.

What is the process for thawing and using frozen embryos?
When ovulation occurs, or once the uterus has been appropriately prepared, frozen embryos are gradually thawed. One or more thawed embryos may then be placed into the uterus during a frozen embryo transfer (FET). After the transfer, we monitor progress to assess whether a pregnancy has been achieved.
How much does embryo freezing cost?
